Gary Thompson, age 68, of Portland, Tennessee, entered into rest on Friday, March 13, 2026. He was born on May 13, 1957, in Gallatin, Tennessee.
As a young man, Gary volunteered with Sumner County Volunteer Ambulance Service, which inspired him to become an EMT, and ultimately a paramedic. Gary worked as a paramedic in Sumner County for 32 years and ended his career as Paramedic In Charge. Gary was highly respected by his coworkers and considered a pioneer in his department.
Gary was truly musically gifted, playing the piano was his first love. However, he also sang, and was a talented guitar, mandolin, and drum player. Gary spent countless hours playing music his whole life.
May he rest in peace.
Gary Arnold Thompson is survived by his son, Matthew Thompson; sister, Phoebe Trammel (Mike), and his childhood best friend Mark Coon Rippy Brown.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph W. Thompson; mother, Lullia (Draper) Thompson; and nephew, Jeremy Trammel.
Visitation will be held at Crestview Funeral Home, on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and again on Friday, March 20, from 9:00 AM until the funeral at 10:00 AM. Bro. Frank Kirby will be officiating the funeral service. Interment in Crestview Memory Gardens will immediately follow.
