Clifford "Max" Irelan, 86, died February 16, 2019, from natural causes. He was born in Newton, Iowa, August 17, 1932, to Clifford S. Irelan and Blanche Kough Irelan. He graduated from Newton High School in 1951 and then shortly interrupted his college career by enlisting in the army during the Korean War, serving from July 1953 to June 1955. Resuming his studies at Simpson College, he obtained a B.S. in Business Administration. It was there he met his wife, Jeanne Ann Wald; last August they celebrated their 61st anniversary. In 1964 they moved to Hendersonville, TN, where he worked as an independent manufacturer's representative in agri-business until his retirement.

Known for his humor and congenial nature, he numbered many friends in all walks of life. He was an avid researcher, notably of genealogy and archaeology, the latter on ancient Native American lore and artifacts. He was a member of the Tennessee Archaeology Society and served on the board of Wynwood Historic Site. His great enjoyment was being a father to his three sons, all of whom have survived him: Jon Frederick (Patricia) of Bethpage, TN, Bradford Wald (Allison) of Houston, TX, and Clifford "Kit" of Portland, OR. He helped coach Little League Football and rarely missed a football and soccer practice or game. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jon P. Irelan (Estella), Molly Irelan, Courtney Simonelli (Christopher), and Madison Irelan; and a great-grandchild, Valentina Simonelli. His sister, Norma Lock, lives in Des Moines, IA. A Memorial Matins Service is planned for Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Gallatin, TN at 10:30 AM.
